Returning Spring 2026 players: If you participated in the Spring 2026 program, your Spring registration included Fall participation. You do not need to register again.

Play Gaelic Football This Fall!

The Essex Shillelaghs GAA (ESGAA), in partnership with the Township of West Orange Department of Recreation, offers West Orange boys and girls a fun, affordable, and inclusive opportunity to play Gaelic football right here in our community.

No previous Gaelic football experience is necessary. ESGAA provides the coaching, equipment, and program management—you provide the player!

For Fall 2026, West Orange families may register for either our Recreational Program or, for students attending Liberty, Edison, or Roosevelt Middle Schools, our new Middle School Intramural Program.

The Fall season begins after Labor Day and runs for a minimum of five weeks.

Choose Your Program

Recreational Gaelic Football — Ages 5–16

Our traditional co-ed recreational program is open to new and returning players ages 5–16.

  • Weekly practices and recreational play in West Orange
  • Age-appropriate instruction for beginners and experienced players
  • Focus on Gaelic football skills, fitness, teamwork, and fun
  • ESGAA coaching and equipment provided
  • Age groups from U6 through U16
  • Opportunities for interested and qualified players to participate in NY GAA games as members of the Essex Shillelaghs

This is the best choice for players who want to learn Gaelic football, develop their skills, and enjoy playing as part of the Essex Shillelaghs youth program.

NEW! Middle School Intramural Gaelic Football — Grades 6–8

Students attending Liberty Middle School, Edison Middle School, or Roosevelt Middle School may elect to participate in ESGAA's new Middle School Intramural Program.

The program is offered in cooperation with the West Orange Department of Recreation and gives middle school students an opportunity to learn and play Gaelic football while participating with classmates as a school cohort.

  • Open to boys and girls in grades 6–8
  • No previous Gaelic football experience required
  • Students participate as Liberty, Edison, or Roosevelt school cohorts
  • Practices, skills training, scrimmages, and intramural games
  • School cohorts may practice alongside other ESGAA players
  • Intramural play takes place in West Orange
  • ESGAA provides coaching, equipment, and program management
  • Coach training is available for interested parents
  • Minimum five-week Fall program

When registering, select Middle School Intramural and identify your child's school: Liberty, Edison, or Roosevelt.

The Middle School Intramural Program is a recreational program conducted in cooperation with West Orange Recreation and ESGAA and is not an interscholastic athletic program of the West Orange Public Schools.

Want More Competition? Play Travel for the Essex Shillelaghs!

Players registered in either the Recreational or Middle School Intramural Program may also have the opportunity to represent the Essex Shillelaghs GAA in NY GAA league games based on age, ability, interest, and roster availability.

  • No additional ESGAA registration fee for Fall travel participation
  • Games may include competition against clubs throughout the New York GAA region
  • Games are commonly played in Yonkers, Rockland, and Queens

Travel participation is an ESGAA/NY GAA activity separate from the West Orange Middle School Intramural Program.

What Does My Child Need?

  • ESGAA provides Gaelic footballs, training equipment, and coaching
  • Players should wear comfortable athletic clothing and appropriate athletic footwear or soccer/turf cleats
  • Team jerseys used for Travel NY GAA games will be provided on game day and returned following the event

Everyone Is Welcome

Whether your child has never seen a Gaelic football before, wants a fun local recreational sport, wants to play alongside classmates, or hopes to represent the Essex Shillelaghs in NY GAA competition, there is a place for them this Fall.

Essex Shillelaghs GAA Code of Conduct
The Essex Shillelaghs Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all members, players, coaches, officials, volunteers, and spectators. As members of the GAA community, we adhere to the following code of conduct:
Respect and Fair Play:
1. Treat all individuals with dignity, respect, and fairness, regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or ability.
2. Respect the decisions of coaches, officials, and administrators, and refrain from engaging in disrespectful or abusive behavior towards them.
3. Play by the rules of the game and demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times, both on and off the field.
4. Celebrate success with humility and show respect towards opponents, teammates, and supporters.

Safe Environment:
5. Prioritize the safety and well-being of all participants by following guidelines and protocols established for training, matches, and events.
6. Report any incidents of harassment, discrimination, bullying, or misconduct to the appropriate club officials or safeguarding officers promptly.
7. Avoid the use of foul language, violence, or aggressive behavior that may jeopardize the safety or welfare of others.
Positive Communication:
8. Communicate constructively and respectfully with teammates, coaches, officials, and opponents, fostering a supportive and positive team environment.
9. Resolve conflicts and disagreements through peaceful and respectful means, promoting open dialogue and understanding.
10. Use social media responsibly, refraining from posting derogatory, offensive, or inappropriate content that reflects poorly on the club or its members.
Commitment and Integrity:
11. Demonstrate commitment to training, competitions, and club activities by attending regularly and punctually, and giving your best effort in all endeavors.
12. Uphold the values of honesty, integrity, and fair play in all interactions, both on and off the field.
13. Represent the Essex Shillelaghs GAA with pride and dignity, maintaining a positive image of the club within the community.
Parents and Guardians:
14. Encourage and support your child's participation in GAA activities, emphasizing the importance of respect, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
15. Respect the authority of coaches, officials, and club administrators, and address any concerns or grievances through appropriate channels in a constructive manner.
Consequences of Violations:
16. Any breach of this code of conduct may result in disciplinary action, including warnings, suspension, or expulsion from the club, as determined by the club's executive committee or disciplinary board.
The club reserves the right to take appropriate action in response to any behavior that is deemed detrimental to the club's values, reputation, or the well-being of its members.
By adhering to this code of conduct, we demonstrate our commitment to upholding the principles of respect, integrity, and inclusivity within the Essex Shillelaghs GAA community.
